choir workshop

ending a very long week,
and a rather long day,
we gather in murmuring expectation.
surely the lord is in this place.

we're given large packets of fresh new songs,
so very much to learn in so little time.
but we skim the evangelic titles,
and our hearts begin to sing a little.

familiar faces and new faces
are looking and seeing and beaming.
joining our smiling friends we realize
the long week has been left outside.

there's jason - loose at the piano,
tuning himself to the spirit in this place -
the master of his art,
and the facilitator of our prayer.

how centred pat seems tonight
the power of the story we will hear later
is an aura visible about her now.
anticipation is her first gift.

then the amiable autocrat himself steps up.
he taps his invisible baton twice firmly.
hello he says. let's go he says.
to work then. 1, 2, 3, …

we enter the sanctuary of praise
and feel the breath of god.
for a while it stills our voice,
then we join in celebration.

the three hours pass too quickly
and we regret the ending,
looking forward to the morrow
with fatigue closing in on our leaving.
gary pat and jason conduct a marvellous choir workshop
in calgary at centre street church each year.
it is a gift to celebrate. this poem was the first of a tradition.
