two miles to spring

it's not spring just yet -
winter still grips us
with cold fingers -
permitting only short breaths.

but soon the geese will come -
and chase away winter
and the last ice on the slough -
noisily celebrating their return.

and you'll walk two miles
in the early spring to hear them -
with cold ears in the morning -
glad to breath deeply.

an encounter with a survivor after his lung surgery,
who yearned for his country home and his daily walk
(it took 6 years of photographing every gagle of geese that flew over to get the right shot).
